a planetary instrument
live now
Everyone on this page is playing the same 16-step loop. It lives in a single Cloudflare Durable Object somewhere on the planet. Every note you place goes from you to your nearest Cloudflare data center, then to the Durable Object's home, then out to everyone else. You can watch it travel. The sun picks the key, and each continent plays its own instrument.
Best with headphones. Your location is only as precise as your city, and it's blurred.
The ring is a shared 16-step loop. Tap a cell to place a note and tap it again to remove it. Drag to paint. Notes fade after about two and a half minutes, so the song keeps changing.
The globe is a live instrument. Tap it, or press 1–8, to play a note right now. Everyone hears it the moment its light reaches them.
Orange dots are Cloudflare's 310 data centers. The tall beacon is where this room's Durable Object lives: one object, one place on Earth, one song.
Each note flies you → your data center → the Durable Object → every listener. It moves at the real speed of light in fiber, slowed down about 22× so you can see it.
The key follows the subsolar point, the spot where the sun is directly overhead. As the Earth turns, the song moves one step around the circle of fifths about every two hours. The mode changes every 32 bars.
Every continent has its own voice: glass in Europe, plucked strings in North America, marimba in South America, kalimba in Africa, koto in Asia, flute in Oceania.
Workers serve the page and the API. Durable Objects with SQLite and hibernating WebSockets hold the song. D1 stores captured constellations and R2 stores their recordings. Workers AI names them, and a Cron Trigger tidies the sky every night.
When the planet is quiet, ghost musicians appear at random data centers and play along.
Moments captured by listeners. Each one keeps the exact notes, who played them, and where from.
